Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde in der deutschen Ägyptologie das Bild von der wertfreien Wissenschaft etabliert, wonach die Vorgängergenerationen unberührt vom wechselnden Zeitgeist und zeitgenössischen Ideologien „objektiv" geforscht und geurteilt hätten. Erst seit wenigen Jahren hat sich der Blick für die Historisierung des Fachs und seiner Inhalte geöffnet. Die methodische Aufarbeitung des Briefnachlasses Georg Steindorffs in Leipzig soll einen Beitrag zu dieser kritischen Selbstvergewisserung des Fachs leisten. Ihre Ergebnisse erfordern einen Perspektivwechsel. Unter der Fragestellung „Wissenshintergründe und Forschungstransfers am Beispiel des Ägyptologen Georg Steindorff" wurden cause und Forschungswege, Rahmenbedingungen und interne Verhältnisse ermittelt, die ein neues Licht auf das Fach werfen. In einem nicht erwarteten Umfang stellen sich deutsche Ägyptologen der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts als Vertreter einer Geisteswissenschaft dar, die sich im Spannungsverhältnis dramatischer Zeitgeschehnisse und nicht zuletzt vor dem Hintergrund eines andauernden Legitimationskampfs geistige und politische traits zunutze machten.
