Um den Zugang für Interpretationsansätze zu ermöglichen, wird der Arbeit eine umfassende Bildbeschreibung vorangestellt. In Kapitel three soll die Werkgenese umfangreich ausgeführt werden. Dabei soll der Technik Turners besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt werden, jedoch auch die Problematik des Entwurfs besondere Beachtung finden.
Basierend auf der Bildbeschreibung soll nun eine ausführliche Ikonologische Interpretation den Hauptteil dieser Arbeit bilden. Dabei sollen unter verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten Deutungsansätze herausgearbeitet werden.
Bevor auf den historischen Hintergrund und den persönlichen Bezug Turners zur britischen Schifffahrt und zum Sujet eingegangen wird, sollen anhand des Titels und der Bildunterschrift Hinweise Turners zur Interpretation herausgearbeitet werden. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt der Ikonologischen Interpretation stellt die Frage dar, ob Turner selber Zeuge des gemalten Ereignisses gewesen ist, um Rückschlüsse von der Szenerie unter besonderer Beachtung der Gestirne, der geografischen Lage und der dargestellten Symbole auf die Deutungsebene zu ziehen.
Dabei soll auch untersucht werden, ob sich in der „Fighting Temeraire“ Industrialisierungskritische Tendenzen im Sinne der Romantik erkennen lassen.
